What is managed process automation?
Managed process automation is a service where a provider builds the automation or tool that does a repeated job, then runs and maintains it for a monthly fee. You get the job done. The provider looks after the system that does it.
Other ways to get a job automated
| Route | Who builds it | Who runs and maintains it | How you pay | How well it fits your process | When the job changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Managed process automation | The provider | The provider | A monthly fee | Built around your job | The provider changes it |
| An agency or consultant | The agency | Usually you, sometimes with a support contract | A fee for the build, then any support | Built around your job | A new piece of work, or you change it yourselves |
| Off-the-shelf software | The software company, for all its customers | You, on the vendor's product | A subscription | You adapt your process to the product | You wait for the product to change, or work around it |
| Building it in-house | Your own people | Your own people | The cost of building and maintaining it yourselves | Built around your job | Your own people change it |
When it suits
- The job is done the same way, over and over.
- You'd rather have the job done than build and look after a system yourselves.
When something else suits better
- If a product already does the job well, use it.
- You want a system your own people run and change. Building it in-house, or having an agency build it, suits that better.
- The work is different every time. Automation suits work that repeats.
